Daring Fireball: Regarding the Verizon and ‘iPhone Lite’ Rumors.
This is a good piece– it applies everything one would learn in an MBA tech strategy class to this situation.
The problem is that AT&T management has to answer to their shareholders, who are addicted to the gains from their Apple relationship.
Regarding Verizon, I always wondered what happened with iPhone negotiations, if there ever was one. I always felt VZW was a bit more strategic and careful to consider the value chain. I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t want to get into a position that compromised their long term strategy.
The post also goes into versioning and capturing incremental value by segmenting markets (although segmenting between two carriers doesn’t make as much sense as segmenting on both).
Overall, a fun read.
